History reference

In 1969 the speciality 0117 "Hydrogeology and engineering geology" was opened at Gomel State University. For 1 year 77 students were admitted. Students from 3-4 years were transferred from Belarusian State University. The Faculty of Geology became an independent unit 12.11.1970, Professor A.R. Kinzikeev was appointed Acting Dean of the Faculty of Geology. It consisted of two departments: the Department of General Geology (Head - professor A. R. Kinzikeev); Department of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology (Head - Professor S.D. Turovsky). The mineralogical museum was opened in the first half of the 1970s.

Геолого-географический факультет ГГУ им. Ф. Скорины

The faculty organized laboratories and classrooms: topography, soil science, hydrogeological research, calculations and modeling, engineering geology, mineralogy, petrography, historical geology and paleontology, geological mapping and structural geology, thermal, soil mechanics, hydrogeochemistry.

In 1977 the Department of Mineralogy, Petrography, and Geochemistry was opened. The duties of the head were performed by the PhD in Geology and Mathematics, associate professor N.F. Pavlov. In 1978 the head of this department was Dr. V.A. Vakhrushev.

In 1984 the Department of Geophysics was opened, the head of which was PhD, associate professor A.P. Pinchuk. In 1986 a new speciality was opened - "Geophysical methods of prospecting and exploration."
In 1989 admission to the speciality "Geography" (full-time and part-time education) was opened.

On September 24, 1990 the Department of Geography was opened at the Faculty of Geology. The head of the Department of Geography was PhD  I.I. Bohdel.

In this connection, the Faculty of Geology was renamed in March 1992 into Geology and Geography, and was supposed to provide training for geography teachers for schools in Gomel region. In the early 90s the teaching speciality "Geography and a Foreign Language" (German, English) was opened.

In 1996 the Department of Geology and Mineral Exploration was organized (based on the Department of Geophysics and the Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology), which provides training in the speciality "Geology and exploration of mineral deposits" (head of the department is Professor A.P. Pinchuk).

By the mid-90s within the framework of existing specialities and departments, an environmental direction developed. Specializations were opened: "Geoecology" in the speciality "Geography" and "Environmental geophysics" in the speciality "Geophysical methods of prospecting and exploration."

On the basis of existing developments in the field of monitoring and environmental protection, the Department of Geoecology was opened in 1996 (the head of the department is PhD, associate professor A.M. Gumen).

In 1998 the speciality "Ecology" was opened (qualification - ecologist-geographer, teacher of geography and ecology). In August 1998 the Department of Geoecology was renamed into the Department of Ecology. The head of the Department of Ecology was PhD, associate professor A.N. Kusenkov.

In the 2000s the preparation of masters in geographical and geological-mineralogical sciences was started.

Faculty today

Currently, the faculty is preparing 3 specialities of the 1st stage and 2 specialities of the 2nd stage of higher education.

Геолого-географический факультет ГГУ им. Ф. Скорины

As a result of training in the speciality of geography, graduates receive the qualification of a geographer, a teacher of geography; speciality of  geoecology – a geographer-ecologist, a teacher of geography and ecology; majoring in geology and exploration of mineral deposits – an engineer-geologist. Graduates of the faculty work in design, research, research and production organizations - according to the profile of the received speciality and specialization; in secondary educational institutions, technical schools, colleges, universities; in the territorial divisions of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus, in the NPC on geology.

Postgraduate studies in the field of Earth sciences and ecology are being conducted.

More than 400 students and 20 undergraduates study at the faculty.
