First Deputy Minister of Education Irina Starovoitova paid a working visit to the Francisk Skorina Gomel State University. Irina Anatolyevna discussed a number of topical issues with the student body of the university  in the format of an open dialogue, which was also attended by First Vice-Rector Andrey Kruk and Vice-Rector for Educational Work Yuri Nikityuk. There were discussed such topics as the pros and cons of distance learning using information and communication technologies.

On October 29, the VIII International Scientific and Practical Conference "Youth and the Spiritual Heritage of the Era: Culture, Artifacts, Values" was held online. The organizers of the conference are the Tula State Pedagogical University named after Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy and the House-Museum of V.V. Veresaev.

On October 29, at the Faculty of Mathematics and Programming Technologies, an English-language webinar "How to Enter IT" was held for 1st and 2nd year students. The seminar was held by representatives of the leading IT company of the Gomel region "IBA-Gomel-Park" - the head of the department of solutions for information and infrastructure management, Itskhaki Lavi, and the chief specialist of the department, Elena Mezheinikova.

Last Saturday, 25 best programmers from among students of regional universities of the Republic of Belarus gathered in Minsk for the final of the Andersen Programming Contest 2020. At the same time, the final of the Ukrainian part of the competition was held  in remote access mode.

On October 26, the World Championship among students in intellectual sports (chess and bridge) started, which will be held on the online platforms http://www.chess24.com/ and http://www.chess.com/. Over 400 participants from 32 countries will take part in the chess championship.

The jubilee X International Scientific Conference "Actual Problems of Romano-Germanic Philology and Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages" was held at the Faculty of Foreign Languages on October 23. The conference brought together scientists conducting scientific and practical research in the areas of discourse analysis, comparative linguistics, linguistics and text stylistics, pragmatics, methods of teaching foreign languages, etc. This year scientists from different continents (America, Africa, Eurasia) arrived to the conference.

On October 22, the Gomel Regional Executive Committee hosted an award ceremony for the winners of the "Best Exporter of 2019" competition. Among the laureates there is Francisk Skorina Gomel State University. GSU was noted in the "Education" nomination according to the results of the republican competition "The Best Exporter of 2019".

The Judo Cup of the Republic of Belarus was held in Mogilev on 15 - 17 October. About a hundred athletes from all regions of the country took part in the first competitions after a long pause. Our region was represented by students of the Faculty of Physical Education of the GSU. A sophomore Ulyana Minenkova won the gold medal in the weight category up to 57 kg. The silver medal in the weight category up to 70 kg was won by the 4th year student Victoria Novikova.
